Activity Report (March 2010 – March 2012)

Membership Growth
The number of members has increased by 156 (or 45%) from 347 members in March 2010 to 503 members in March 2012. 80 new members have joined in 2010 and 71 in 2011, 10 have resigned, 6 have left Turkey and 29 memberships have been cancelled due to nonpayment of membership dues and one of our most loyal member, Rene Somek has passed away.

Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs
The number of OMGD members has continued to increase since its introduction in Turkey in July 2008 and has reached 283 members. Thereby our Turkish Bailliage became the largest country in number of OMGD members within la Chaîne worldwide in just four years, by passing Switzerland in the second place with 226 members.

Financial Growth
The association income has increased during the last two years from TL 154,519.32 in March 2010 to TL 237,036.19 in February 2012, which means that our net income has increased by 53% during the last two years. Thanks to all our loyal members and the many sponsors of our events and in particular the sponsors of the National and International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition as well as the National Jeunes Sommeliers Competition.

Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition
The 14th National Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs competition took place on March 18, 2010 at the School of Culinary Arts at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, where 10 young talented young chefs from various hotels and restaurants in Turkey have participated. The winner was Murat Çakıcı from Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, who has represented Turkey in the International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition which took place in Helsinki, Finland on September 17, 2010.

The 15th National Young Commis Chefs Competition took place at the School of Culinary Arts at Yeditepe University in Istanbul on May 11, 2011 whereby 12 young talented young chefs from various hotels and restaurants around Turkey have participated; the winner was Remzi İçöz from Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir who has represented Turkey in the International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition which took place in Istanbul, Turkey on September 9, 2011.

Jeunes Sommeliers Competition
The 2nd National Jeunes Sommeliers competition organised by the Chaine des Rotisseurs National Bailliage de Turquie in cooperation with the Turkish Sommeliers Association (TSD) took place on June 23, 2010 at Hyatt Regency Hotel Istanbul. The winner was BURÇAK DESOMBRE who represented Turkey at the 4th International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition which was held on October 22, 2010 in Santander, Spain.

The winner of the 3rd National Jeunes Sommeliers competition organised by the Chaine des Rotisseurs National Bailliage de Turquie in cooperation with the Turkish Sommeliers Association (TSD) on May 31, 2011 at Mutfak Sanatları Akademisi (Culinary Arts Academy) was MUSTAFA ZORLUOĞLU who represented Turkey at the 5th International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition which took place in Athens, Greece on September 16, 2011.

International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition
The competition took place on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the kitchens of the Gastronomy School of Yeditepe University. The competitors from 21 different countries worldwide arrived on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 and had an eventful touristic and educational program, both before and after the competition, including a tour of the Egyptian Bazaar guided by our Chaîne member, and food historian Vedat Başaran, a visit to Sultanahmet area touristic attractions, a lunch at Nar Lokantasi, a visit to the Grand Bazaar, a dinner at Beyti Restaurant including a visit to their kitchen facilities, a visit to the Turkish meat processing company Apikoğlu, with tasting of their products and a lunch at their premises, a night out after the competition at Morfy’s Dance Bar in Kalamış, and attending the food and wine fair which we have arranged under the name “The Tastes of Turkey”.

This year three of our members, namely The Executive Chef of Pera Palace then, Max Thomae, The Executive Chef of Divan Group Levent Şahin, and the TV Chef Eyüp Kemal Sevinҫ have been selected to be jurors in the International Competition.

The 18th International Grand Chapitre
The International Grand Chapitre took place in Istanbul, during the period of September 8-11, 2011, and was attended by some 460 participants, of which 250 were foreign Chaine members from 32 different countries worldwide.

The four days program included a welcome dinner at Borsa Restaurant on September 8, 2011, a half day sightseeing of Istanbul old city attractions on September 9, followed by an exquisite lunch buffet at the famous Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet district, and ended the day with an unforgettable, spectacular five hours Bosphorus cruise dinner served by the Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet. On Saturday, September 10, all foreign and local members were invited to the unique “The Taste of Turkey” food & wine fair, organized by the Turkish National Bailliage, and was held at the gardens of the Chapitre official hotel (Hilton Istanbul). Late afternoon, the 35th International Jeunes Chefs Rotisseurs Competition’s award ceremony took place at the Four Seasons Hotel at the Bosphorus, followed by the induction ceremony, whereby the official inducting representative Gunter Albert has inducted 93 new CDR and 57 OMGD members and 30 promoted CDR members.

Thereafter, the participants proceeded to the ballroom, whereby an exquisite six course gala dinner menu, especially composed and prepared by the hotel executive chef Mehmet Gök and his kitchen brigade, has been served on time to all 460 members and guests.

The Grand Chapitre ended on Sunday, September 11th with a farewell lunch at the legend Beyti Restaurant.

Greek-Turkish Friendship Meetings
The traditional Greek-Turkish friendship get together (culinary reunion) that has been initiated in 2005, continued uninterrupted also in 2010 and 2011, with growing interest from the members from both countries to take part in this unique annual event.

The 6th annual Greek-Turkish culinary reunion took place on May 21 – 24, 2010, in the Aegean Coast of Turkey, whereby a group of thirteen Greek and eleven Turkish Chaîne members, led by their two respective National Baillis Délégués, Tassos Kioulpapas and Mohamed Hammam spent a marvelous long weekend together, visiting the unique historical sites of this region, including Ephesus, Sirince, Urla, Alacati and Izmir.

The 7th annual Greek – Turkish culinary reunion took place in Crete Island on May 24 – May 29, 2011. 32 Turkish members and 20 Greek members lead by the two respective Baillis Délégués, Mohamed Hammam and Tassos Kioulpapas attended the event, which was a culinary and wine experience combined with visits to the archeological and historical sites of Crete.

Other Friendship Meetings
Within the context of the Chaîne US Ambassador program, the Turkish Bailliage hosted 33 members from the USA Regional Bailliages, namely Boston, Colonial New England, and New Hampshire lead by USA Chaîne Ambassador Richard Caparso, in a Gala Dinner held on October 8th, 2010 at the Moevenpick Hotel Istanbul and was attended by 80 Turkish members lead by the Bailli Délégué of Turkey Mohamed Hammam.

Our Chaîne friends from the Bailliage of Oulu Finland have once again invited us to visit their city, have some joint activities and together participate in their Winter International Grand Chapitre which took place on February 4 – 6, 2011 in the northeastern city of “Kuusamo/Ruka”. 18 Turkish members lead by Mohamed Hammam attended the event which was indeed a unique and unforgettable trip and which took place between February 1 – 8, 2011.

A group of 16 Turkish members from Antalya and Istanbul Regional Bailliages, lead by the Bailli Délégué Honoraire and Regional Bailli of Antalya, Atok İlhan, participated in the Dutch International Grand Chapitre which took place on September 30th – October 1st, 2011 in Amsterdam.
